Please join the La Crosse Area League of Women Voters for a discussion of trends in public education funding, the upcoming biennial state budget and the expected debate over allocation of one-time federal pandemic relief funds.

Our speaker, Troy Gunderson, is former superintendent of the School District of West Salem, and a 2021 candidate for the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. His 35-year career in public education includes stints as a classroom teacher, a high school principal, and district superintendent, giving him a broad perspective on the pressures facing educators and how public policy actions affect the capacity to serve and educate students.

vote2-23
The League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area has launched its VOTE411.org voter guide for the Spring Primary Election.
This one-stop shop for statewide election information has tools– in both English and Spanish– to help Wisconsin voters navigate the voting process. Voter guides are especially helpful for nonpartisan spring elections, as candidates on the ballot are not marked with any party affiliation. On VOTE411, voters can learn more about the responsibilities of these offices and each candidate's values.

News from the Board

At the January LWVLA Board meeting, the Board voted unanimously to allocate 100% of all donations received through April 2023 directly to the Voter Services Committee to support our work during this most important spring election.
If you would like to help with this effort go to lwvla.org to donate any amount.

Wisconsin Supreme Court
The Wisconsin Supreme Court, sometimes referred to as SCOWI, is the state's highest court. It's responsible for determining if laws violate the Wisconsin Constitution. It also establishes and enforces rules and codes of conduct for Wisconsin attorneys, judges and the justices themselves.
Why does this matter? The Wisconsin Supreme Court makes decisions that affect us all. Their rulings can decide: voting rights, reproductive rights, economic development, educational policy and more.  While the justices serve 10-year terms, the impact of their decisions can last for even longer.
La Crosse School Board
There are nine candidates running for School Board this year, so a primary must be held to narrow the field to eight, as there will be four school board members elected in April. The four positions will be three for three year terms, and one for a one year term to fill the position vacated by the resignation of Rob Abraham before his term expired.
Why does this matter? The school board is the legislative body of a school district. The school board adopts the annual school district budget and a strategic plan that includes district goals, initiatives and projects. They are also responsible for policies regarding student learning, curriculum, instruction and assessment, parents and community, and personnel. Voters elect board members to represent their district for a three-year term in nonpartisan elections. There are no term limits.
Wisconsin Circuit Courts
The Wisconsin Circuit Courts are the main trial courts for civil cases (for example, divorce or custody cases) and criminal cases (for example, robbery). These courts are funded by state and county government.
Why does this matter? The Wisconsin Circuit Courts rulings impact many Wisconsinites. Their rulings decide family law disputes, civil rights, disability rights, voting rights, public safety and labor rights. Voters decide who sits on the bench.

February Book Club
February 27, 2023 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm
In Person
2-23 book club
In their remote mountain village, Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akha people, life goes on as it has for generations—until a stranger appears at the village gate in a jeep. When Li-yan has a baby out of wedlock she rejects the tradition that would compel her to give the child over to be killed, and instead leaves her, wrapped in a blanket with a tea cake tucked in its folds, near an orphanage in a nearby city.
The February Book Club will again gather in the meeting room of RiverPlace Apartments, located at 1 RiverPlace Dr., La Crosse, which is adjacent to International Friendship Gardens. Participants should enter through the front entrance and press "18" on the entryway intercom. Parking is available in front of the building or in the International Friendship Gardens parking lot in back.
Since this meeting is indoors and therefore not subject to weather restrictions, there will be no back-up Zoom link. Although registration for this in-person meeting will not be required, participants are encouraged to register if they wish to receive an event reminder as well as any potential updates to meeting information.
