As poets, writers, and members of the League of Women Voters, we recognize the power of language to connect people—to stir hearts and minds, and to reaffirm the enduring promise of Democracy. Through poetry, we aim to illuminate its beauty, its fragility, and its strength—especially at a time when we can no longer afford to take its core principles for granted.

Twenty-five years after the publication of his groundbreaking first book, Malcolm Gladwell returns with a brand-new volume that reframes the lessons of The Tipping Point in a startling and revealing light.
Why is Miami…Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns for the first time in twenty-five years to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena

Local news reporting plays a critical role in the health of our communities—and our democracy. What is the impact -- here and nationwide -- of declining news coverage on civil discourse and emerging hyper-partisanship in local non-partisan government? Rusty Cunningham will discuss changes in local news coverage and the impact on civic engagement, government accountability, erosion of community connections and increased political polarization. He will discuss strategies for the LWV to create and promote civil discourse and citizen engagement in local government.
The public is welcome to join us for lunch or at no cost to attend the 12:00 p.m. program only. Registration (below) offers options to reserve lunch or to only attend the program in-person. A recording of the program will be posted on our website shortly after the live event.
Lunches must be reserved and paid for by the end of the day Thursday, 10/2 . Pre-paid lunches are nonrefundable.

In The Art Thief, Michael Finkel brings us into Breitwieser’s strange and fascinating world. Unlike most thieves, Breitwieser never stole for money. Instead, he displayed all his treasures in a pair of secret rooms where he could admire them to his heart’s content. Possessed of a remarkable athleticism and an innate ability to circumvent practically any security system, Breitwieser managed to pull off a breathtaking number of audacious thefts. Yet these strange talents bred a growing disregard for risk and an addict’s need to score, leading Breitwieser to ignore his girlfriend’s pleas to stop—until one final act of hubris brought everything crashing down.
