The LWVLA 2022 Annual Meeting

Please view our virtual Annual Meeting to see an overview of our League's work throughout our 2021 - 2022 year. Our program opens with a presentation from Kim Smith, mayor of Onalaska, about the relationship between her degree in Servant Leadership and her role as a civic leader. Following Ms. Smith, members of our active committees from last year provide brief reports on their activities and accomplishments. At the end of the meeting, members present voted on the business items traditionally offered for approval at our Annual Meeting,

Climate Action in the Urban, Suburban, and Rural Coulee Region


Activities in our own backyard are helping to mitigate impacts from 
and reduce contributions to climate change.  The April Lunch and Learn program featured three distinct efforts in the Coulee Region that will hopefully inspire us and continue the momentum for helping our climate future.

Dr. Jodi Vandenberg-Daves, Professor and Chair of Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the UW-La Crosse , presents an overview of the progress made toward equal rights as a result of the efforts of feminists from the mid-1800's to today.

Meagan Wolfe is the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, a six-member bipartisan body (three Democrats and three Republicans) whose members are selected by the legislature and the governor. 

Ms. Wolfe will be joined at our Lunch & Learn by La Crosse County Clerk, Ginny Dankmeyer. As the chief election officials  for our state and county, they are charged with administering and enforcing our election laws. Ms. Wolfe and Dankmeyer will 
speak about what we learned from 2020 and how post-election reviews may affect the administration of our 2022 elections.

November’s Lunch and Learn, “Addressing Homelessness in the La Crosse Area,” will delve into causes of area homelessness and discuss how area nonprofits, the city, and the county are helping to address the situation. In addition, the panel will provide information about cooperation among agencies and budget concerns.

The League supports programs and policies that
prevent or reduce poverty, 
promote self-sufficiency for individuals and families, 
provide decent, adequate standards for food, clothing and shelter, 
provide a decent home and suitable living environment for every American family, and
support violence prevention programs in communities.

Sheriff Wolf and Chief Kudron answered League questions regarding a range of policing issues including transparency; officer training; efforts to build public trust, diversity, equity; and challenges faced by local law enforcement.

The Criminal Justice Management Council was developed to evaluate the criminal justice system's implementation of the La Crosse County correctional philosophy. Members of the council will discuss progress made in the past ten years and aspirations for the next ten years of the criminal justice system related to the issues of sentencing diversion, inclusion, equity and transparency.
