News From the LWVLA Board
Robin Schmidt, past LWVLA President and now former Board member, was appointed by Governor Evers to serve on the state Natural Resources Board (NRB) on Tuesday, October 17th. Last week the Senate voted to reject all 4 of Governor Evers' appointments made to the NRB in May. Upon that Senate vote, Governor Evers immediately nominated 4 new members, including Robin Schmidt. The new appointees are Todd Ambs, who retired from the DNR in 2021 as deputy secretary; Robin Schmidt, who retired from the DNR in 2018 after working at the agency for 34 years; Patty Schactner, a former Democratic state senator, and Douglas Cox, who currently serves as land management director for the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. Robin and the 3 other new appointees will serve on the Natural Resources Board while waiting on Senate action (confirmation or rejection).

We wish Robin well and will miss her on the Board.

For League, defending democracy and ending discrimination go hand in hand. Transgender Awareness Week (Nov 13-19) is an annual effort to help raise the visibility of transgender people and address concerns members of the community face. In response to 2023 as a record-breaking year for the introduction of legislation that affects trans and nonbinary people, the League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area (LWVLA) will present a local panel to discuss issues affecting the human rights of transgender people.

Our Speakers:

In her twenties, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library, becoming a fixture on the New York society scene and art and book world. But Belle has a secret that she must protect -- she is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Her complexion isn't dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white—her complexion is dark because she is African American. The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths to which she must go to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in a racist world.

Social media companies were right in the middle of the election dynamics in 2016 and 2020. During that time, Katie Harbarth was in a key policy position at Facebook. After leaving Facebook (now Meta), she was publicly outspoken in her description of the policies at her former employer. LeaderEthics is proud to support the Rotary Leadership Series program, featuring a presentation by Katie Harbarth. Register Here to attend this no-cost virtual program.

The Rotary Leadership Series is hosted by the Rotary Club of La Crosse in partnership with the La Crosse area Rotary clubs.
